Cloud Penetration Testing

Your cloud environment is configured. But is it secure?

Misconfigured IAM policies, over-permissive roles, exposed storage, and unprotected workloads – cloud environments fail in ways that traditional security tools don’t catch. AMATAS cloud penetration testing finds and chains those weaknesses the way a real attacker would.

Configuration scanners tell you what looks wrong against a ruleset. Cloud penetration testing tells you what’s actually exploitable – how an attacker with a low-privilege foothold could escalate to full environment control, exfiltrate data from an exposed storage bucket, pivot from a compromised container into your on-premise network, or abuse a misconfigured Kubernetes cluster to access secrets.

AMATAS cloud penetration testing is manual, adversarial, and scoped to your actual threat model – conducted by experts who understand cloud-native attack paths, not just generic vulnerability lists.

Testing approach

Black-box, gray-box, or white-box - scoped to your needs

The right approach depends on what you’re trying to simulate and what access reflects your real threat model. We scope the approach with you during the initial call.

Black-box: No prior access

Testing begins from zero – simulating an external attacker with no prior knowledge of your cloud environment. Focuses on what’s discoverable and exploitable from the outside.

Gray-box: Limited credentials

Testing begins with low-privilege credentials – simulating an attacker who has gained an initial foothold through phishing, credential stuffing, or a compromised workload.

White-box: Full access & documentation

Full read access and architecture documentation provided – allowing the deepest possible review of IAM policies, configurations, and attack paths across the entire environment.

Test coverage

What we assess in every cloud penetration test

Identity & access management

Overprivileged roles, misconfigured policies, and privilege escalation paths – the leading cause of cloud breaches.

Data exposure

Publicly accessible storage, unencrypted data at rest, and misconfigured access controls on databases and data lakes.

Network security

Security group rules, firewall configurations, exposed management interfaces, and inter-workload network segmentation.

Workload & compute security

Virtual machines, serverless functions, and cloud-native services – tested for misconfigurations and unpatched vulnerabilities.

Containers & Kubernetes

Container escape, cluster misconfiguration, RBAC abuse, exposed dashboards, and secrets stored insecurely in manifests.

Lateral movement & pivot paths

How an attacker chains misconfigurations to move between workloads, accounts, and from cloud into on-premise environments.

Platform coverage

AWS, Azure & GCP - tested natively

Each cloud platform has a distinct security model, identity system, and attack surface. We test each platform using cloud-native methodologies – not generic network scanning applied to cloud infrastructure.

Amazon Web Services

  • IAM roles, policies & privilege escalation
  • S3 bucket exposure & access controls
  • EC2, Lambda & ECS workload security
  • VPC configuration & security groups
  • EKS & container security
  • Secrets Manager & metadata endpoint abuse

Microsoft Azure

  • Entra ID (Azure AD) & RBAC assessment
  • Blob storage & data lake exposure
  • VM & AKS workload testing
  • NSG & Azure Firewall configuration
  • Azure Functions & API Management
  • Key Vault & managed identity abuse

Google Cloud Platform

  • IAM bindings & service account abuse
  • Cloud Storage bucket exposure
  • GKE & Compute Engine workload testing
  • VPC firewall rules & network configuration
  • Cloud Functions & API security
  • Secret Manager & metadata server abuse
When to use it

The right moments for cloud penetration testing

Before or after cloud migration

Validate your cloud configuration is secure as you move workloads – or catch misconfigurations introduced during migration.

Annual security validation

Cloud environments change constantly – annual penetration testing ensures your controls keep pace with your infrastructure.

Regulatory compliance

DORA, NIS2, ISO 27001, and PCI DSS require regular security testing of your infrastructure – cloud included.

After major architecture changes

New accounts, regions, services, or Kubernetes clusters – each change is an opportunity for misconfiguration. Test after significant changes.

Compliance support

Regulatory frameworks this service supports

Our cloud penetration testing reports are structured to provide audit-ready evidence across the following frameworks and standards.

FAQ

Cloud penetration testing - common questions

How is cloud penetration testing different from a CSPM tool?

CSPM tools provide automated, continuous configuration scanning against known rules – they tell you what looks misconfigured. Cloud penetration testing is manual and adversarial – our experts actively attempt to exploit misconfigurations and chain them into realistic attack paths that CSPM tools report individually but never connect. CSPM tells you what’s wrong. Cloud penetration testing shows you what’s actually exploitable and what a real attacker could achieve with it.

Is cloud penetration testing safe to run on production environments?

Yes – we define clear rules of engagement before testing begins, explicitly excluding destructive actions such as deleting resources or modifying production data. We conduct testing in a way that identifies vulnerabilities without disrupting your services, and maintain a direct communication channel throughout so any unexpected impact can be addressed immediately.

Do you need full administrative access to our cloud environment?

The access level depends on the testing approach we agree during scoping. Black-box testing requires no prior access. Gray-box testing starts from low-privilege credentials that simulate a realistic initial foothold. White-box testing uses read-only access to conduct the most thorough review. All access is granted through temporary, audited credentials and revoked upon engagement closure.

Do you test containers and Kubernetes as part of a cloud penetration test?

Yes – container and Kubernetes security is included in the scope where relevant to your environment. We test for container escape paths, Kubernetes RBAC misconfigurations, exposed API servers and dashboards, secrets stored insecurely in manifests or environment variables, and lateral movement between pods and namespaces. This covers EKS on AWS, AKS on Azure, and GKE on GCP.

Do you test multi-cloud environments?

Yes – we assess AWS, Azure, and GCP environments, and test multi-cloud deployments where workloads span more than one provider. Cross-cloud attack paths – where a compromise in one environment enables lateral movement into another through shared identity systems or trust relationships – are a specific focus in multi-cloud engagements.
